The remainder of the partially collapsed Miami condominium building has been demolished as the death toll continues to rise.
On Sunday at 10:30 p.m. EST, the Champlain Towers South Condo in Surfside, Florida, was demolished in a controlled explosion amid concerns of strong winds from Tropical Storm Elsa.
During the demolition, residents were instructed to stay inside their homes to avoid dust and other byproducts of the destruction.
As reported by The New York Times, Mayor Daniella Levine Cava of Miami-Dade County said the demolition may help search and rescue teams reach areas of the rubble that have yet to be scavenged.
Additionally, Cava said at a news briefing Monday that the demolition was “executed exactly as planned.”
“There is hope that there are voids that will allow us to continue the search and rescue operation,” she continued.
During a Sunday appearance on CBS’s “Face the Nation,” Surfside Mayor Charles Burkett emphasized, “It is absolutely not a recovery effort.”
"There is nobody in charge really talking about stopping this rescue effort. And this rescue effort, as far as I'm concerned, will go on until everybody is pulled out of that debris."
Early Monday, rescue crews resumed their search and discovered three more bodies at the site of the tragedy.
As of this writing, The Times reports that the death toll is at 27. More than 100 people remain missing.
Last week, rescue crews found the body of the 7-year-old daughter of a Miami firefighter. Authorities have declined to release the name of the young victim.
In an emotional statement, Chief Alan Cominsky of Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said, “Every victim we remove, it’s difficult. Last night was even more, when we were removing a fellow firefighter’s daughter.”
“As firefighters, we do what we do. It’s kind of a calling. And we always say that. But it still takes a toll,” he added.
Previously, it was announced that Lucia Guara, 10, and her younger sister Emma, 4, had also been found in the destruction.
The young girls reportedly lived on the eighth floor with their parents Anaely Rodriguez and Marcus Guara, who were also killed.
Our condolences go out to everyone affected by this horrible tragedy.
